Chapter - 1 : Introduction And Characteristics of a Computer System

Definition of Computer :

  • Computer is a programmable electronic device, which has the capacity to process or manipulate a given set of organized data at a very high speed, to generate the desired information, according to the instructions provided.
  • Programmable : able to be provided with coded instructions for the automatic performance of a task.
  • Electronic devices are components for controlling the flow of electric currents for the purpose of information processing and system control.
  • In other words, a computer is an advanced electronic device that takes raw data as input from the user and processes it in ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) under the control of set of instructions (called program), produce the result (output), and saves it for the future use.
  • Process  is a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.

Data :
  • Data is a collection of raw facts and figures without any sequence which is processed to produce information.
  • Facts or data can be any set of items.
  • Data can be words, numbers, symbols, graphics, etc.
  • Example : name, number of days, sale figures, etc.

Information :
  • Information is the organized, meaningful and useful interpretation of data.
  • Information is data which has been converted into meaningful results.
  • Examples are time-table, merit list, report card, printed documents, pay slips and receipts etc.

Characteristics of a Computer System
  • Characteristics are the features or qualities belonging typically to a person, place or thing and serving to identify them.
  • There are five major characteristics of a computer system :
  1. Speed : The speed of something is the rate at which it moves or travels.
The speed of computer determines how fast you can open and run a program. The speed of computer depends on the amount of RAM and Processor speed.

Computer is an electronic device. Data and the instructions to process the data travels inside the computer as electrons that move at an incredible speed, equivalent, to that of light. Thus, the time taken by the computer to process a set of data as per the instructions is measured not as hours, minutes and seconds, but as thousandth of a second - milliseconds, millionth of a second - microseconds, billionth of a second - nanoseconds.

How to check the amount of RAM and processor speed ?
In Mac OS,
Apple Icon >> About This Mac >> More Info

In Windows OS,
Start Menu >> Control Panel >> System

Processor speed indicates how fast your computer runs and is measured in megahertz (MHz) and gigahertz (GHz).

RAM indicates the storage space your computer uses to store and read data. The more memory computer has, the faster it can run and open programs.

      2. Accuracy :  The accuracy of a computer is consistently high, which is not in case of human being; one could commit approximately one error per 50 - 100 calculation. A computer commits no error and has the same efficiency and reliabilty with any amount of data.

Accuracy of a computer depends on using bug-free computer chips as well as the quality of input.

       3. Storage : Computers have huge storage capacity. Data can be permanently stored on other devices like disks and tapes.

        4. Diligence :  Being an electronic device, a computer does not suffer from the human traits like tiredness, lack of concentration and boredom.

After several millions of instructions, it will perform with the exactly the same accuracy and speed as the first one, provided the working conditions, such as power temperature and humidity conditions are maintained within the desired level.

Computers, therefore, are better than human beings in performing voluminous and repetitive jobs.

       5. Versatility :  Versatility means ability to adapt or be adapted to many different functions or activities. We can use computer to perform completely different types of work at the same time.

Computer seems capable of performing almost any task efficiently, provided that task can be broken down to a series of logical steps, and provided to the computer in the way, that it can understand.

What my life seems to me when I was all alone . . .

It swiftly flows and penetrates a few feet of atmosphere before getting collide with a stone. It hurts, breaks into parts yet connected, and scatters in almost all directions. Lets get rewinded from collision with the stone, drifting itself down the atmosphere to the beginning to know what exactly it is. It is nothing but the tears of a boy, rolling down his cheek appears as reddish as the setting sun. A boy who has intense desire to do something peculiar but the best for the society . . . who wanna go for the journey of his life through the road never taken . . . who visualizes every thoughts through the lens of his heart, is no one other than me. It's me who is crying his heart out, sitting all alone away from the crowd and home on a stone in the peak of the Brook's hill, and no one is there to wipe out my tears, to ease my pain and to strike out my fear.

The First Love Letter

Tere khuwabon ko haqiqat mein badal ke . . .
Har gum ko khusiyon mein badal ke . . .
Jab koi aap se bepanaah karega . . .
Na chahkar v chahat karna aap sikh jaoge . . .
Tab aap mohabbat ko apni jindagi bana loge . . .
Aur aap usko apna sab kuch bana loge . . .

Nafraton ko aashiqui mein badal ke . . .
Rahon ko manzil mein badal ke . . .
Jab wo ajnabee mohabbat ke barish lutayega . . .
Pyar ke badle mein pyar karna sikh jaoge . . .
Tab uska anjana chehra jana-pehachana sa lagega . . .
Har lamha uski yaadon me gujarne lagega . . .

Aap ke betabiyon ko rahat mein badal ke . . .
Aap ke sawalon ko jawab mein badal ke . . .
Jab wo sher-o-sayari mein mein pyar ka izhaar karega . . .
Aap ke aur se haan sunne ki wo umeed rakhega . . .
Tab na jaane aap ka kya jawab hoga . . .
Par uske liye toh dil ka sawal hoga . . .

Dil ke Rehgujar

Dil k rehgujar se gujarne laga hoon . . .
Fashloin k darmiyan unhe dhundne laga hoon . . .
Ab to khuda hi dekhaye koi raah mujhe . . .
Kyunki ab main har raah se gumraah hone laga hoon . . .

Khuli ankhoin se sapne dekhne laga hoon . . .
Apne aap se baatein karne laga hoon . . .
Jab se dekha hai tujh ko maine
Hota hai pyar kya ye samjhne laga hoon . . .

Bacchon-si harqaatein karne laga hoon . . .
Janbujh k galtiyan karne laga hoon . . .
Jab se paya hai ye pyar ko apne dil me . . .
Main khuwabon k bhul-bhulaiyon me khone laga hoon . . .

Nindon ko khud se juda karne laga hoon . . .
Mohabbat k bekarari me ab jeene laga hoon . . .
Tu aitbaar kar le ish dil k deewangi pe
Kyunki ish dil ko ab main tere hawale karne laga hoon . . .

The Arena of Creativity

The world around us call this century as "the century of globalization" where the core of all development is the concatenation of the growth of business, defense, finance, management and technology. In this battle of progression, nation is striving to produce experts in those fields. As a result of this some pure form of arts that came into existence by virtue of imagination and creativity are turning down. The very purpose of the article is to encourage people to go after perfection in any arena of creativity they want to. it does not matter whether it is about to lose their identity or it may, along with the popular ones. If you have talent with some sot of luck, you may get caught by the flash in the pan. And if your arena of creativity over stepped the order of nature and/or humanity, then it will have my signboard declaring "Objection over-ruled ! Give up your evil innovation".
